Waterline Boats ~broker spotlight | Dave Carleson

July 7, 2016

WLB-Broker-Spotlight-DC
Born in Salem, Oregon, Dave Carleson has loved boats his whole life. Boating was a family thing, making family trips to the coast and renting rowboats on the Siletz River from a very young age. When Dave was older, he purchased a Gary 18 Sailboat, but his first boat was one he and his father built together when he was 4 years old.

DC
“We were on a farm near the Willamette River and as a child we would go to the river for picnics and drag boats on strings, pond boats we had built. So interest in the water just came with being born into this family.”

In the 70s Dave moved to Portland and began his 26-year -long teaching career. At the same time, he developed a fiberglass canoe company that, over time, built more than a thousand canoes. Later, his company built a sailboat, a Bahama 25, which sold commercially in the Bay area California and Seattle.

“I dreamed in those days of being able to not teach school anymore and have a water related business in Seattle.”

In the 80s Dave took a year off from both teaching and the canoe business. He lived aboard a Jason 35 sailboat. Once the year was up he found he didn’t want to go back and in 1989 he co-founded and owned Mahina Yachts on Bainbridge Island. For 25 years he connected buyers and sellers and loved what he did. He and few others were the first small group of Washington brokers to qualify as Certified Professional Yacht Brokers (CPYB).

In 2015 Dave was working on a co-broker deal with Scott and Lisa Helker of Waterline Boats. Dave appreciated their friendliness and professional ethics when it came to the people they worked with and for. Scott and Lisa were also impressed by Dave and offered him a job. Dave started working at Waterline Boats in May 2015.

Today, Dave lives on Bainbridge Island and owns a 38’ Sportfisher. He has cruised around a lot of Puget Sound and loves getting away and exploring.

“You get out to Neah Bay where the ocean meets the straights I would have to say that’s a big favorite of mine. Where big geographical areas converge. All of it is richer. The birds, the seaweed, the climate changes. It’s more wild.”

With so many years as a boater and a broker under his belt, Dave knows that with true boaters it’s about adventure. What boating have you done in the past? What boating adventures would you like to do? If you have an adventure in mind, Dave wants to help you make it happen.

Waterline Boats ~broker spotlight | Gary Buck

June 30, 2016

WLB-Broker-Spotlight-GB
Born in Puyallup and spending 35 years of his life on Lake Tapps, Gary Buck has been on and around boats since he was very young.

GB
At first, it was trailerable boats. Gary learned to waterski on Puget Sound behind his wife’s Father’s boat. At 26, Gary bought his first boat, a 14’ Fiberform ski boat. A few years later, his interest in boating grew when his brother bought a sailboat. Gary’s been sailing ever since.

“I love the smell of the salt air. I love the tidal changes. It’s always made me feel like you’re close to the heartbeat of the earth. As the tide moves up and down its like the earth breathing. Ever-changing.”

Before becoming a yacht broker and a sailboat owner, Gary was a regional sales manager for 17 years. His job had him crisscrossing the country. He knew he wanted to buy a sailboat and looked at boats in marinas all over the U.S. While in San Francisco, Gary and a surveyor were walking away from an obvious “NO” when the surveyor mentioned a 37’ Hunter he’d seen the day before. Gary looked at, purchased, and currently owns that Hunter. Today he happily calls it home.

“The idea that if you wanted to you could just untie from the dock and just go away. There’s an opportunity for freedom with a boat that you don’t feel when you live in a house.”

Gary bought his Hunter in 2008. That same year another thing happened, the economy collapsed. His company let their entire sales department go and Gary was out of a job. He considered retirement. He loved his new boat and the time he was spending at marinas and on the water. However, he missed the interactions he had in a professional sales organization. When he saw an ad from Waterline Boats to become a boat broker he answered it.

“I get to meet a lot of really nice people. And I get opportunities to do things that really escape anybody else’s opportunity window.. I help people to find boats and really make friends in an industry of people who are like minded. Its those opportunities that make the job really fun.”

Gary lives aboard his sailboat. When he’s not helping other boaters find or sell their boats, he enjoys sailing his boat north to enjoy the vistas and crabbing in the summertime.

Do you dream of life on the water? Call Gary and ask him how to make that dream come true.

Waterline Boats ~broker spotlight | Gretchen Miles

May 3, 2016

WLB-Broker-Spotlight-GM
Like so many native Washingtonians, Gretchen Miles is a lover of the outdoors. Early on it was the mountains, not the water that had her attention. Climbing and hiking are passions of hers. However, while boating may have started out on the periphery of Gretchen’s life it didn’t stay there.

GM

A life-changing love of boating began when Gretchen and her husband Ron Miles chartered a Bayliner for their honeymoon. To new-to-cruising newlyweds the work was a little more than they bargained for.

“We sort of bit off a big chunk. I call it ignorance is bliss. We just did it. Didn’t even think about it. It wasn’t a working honeymoon like chartering a sailboat would have been, but it was still a working honeymoon.”

The trip turned out to be a labor of love and they really enjoyed the experience.

A few years later, Gretchen and Ron bought their first boat, a Bayliner 2858. A few years later, like so many boaters, they were ready for a larger boat and wanted a trawler. They purchased and loved their Mainship 390. A little while after that, they were enticed by the idea of life as liveaboards. Being raised in the country, Gretchen wanted a home that offered both friendly neighbors and privacy.

“We really didn’t have much of a community in my neighborhood. That’s what I was looking for. I was looking for that community.”

One day, they were on their dinghy circling around a boat they admired and were spotted by the boat’s owners, Scott and Lisa Helker (now owners of Waterline Boats). An awkward exchange turned into a years’ long friendship and the two couples helped each other as they looked for their respective liveaboard vessels.

Gretchen found her boat-buying experience to be positive and enjoyable, and she was inspired. She loved learning about different vessels. But she’d also heard so many horror stories that differed from the wonderful time she’d enjoyed. She thought she could use her knowledge and experience to help others by becoming a yacht broker.

For Gretchen, being a yacht broker is a chance to serve, to learn, and to ensure that sellers and buyers would have as good a time finding or selling their boat as she did.

“I love looking and learning about boats. I had a really good experience (especially with Scott and Lisa) looking for my boat… I want people to enjoy their experience, I want them to feel like somebody’s got their back both as a seller and as a buyer…I want them to know I’m really working on their behalf.”

Gretchen, Ron, and their Portuguese Water Dog Gracie now live aboard a DeFever 49. They found her in Alaska and had a six-week adventure bringing her home. Once merely on the periphery, boating is now a big and wonderful part of Gretchen’s life.

“We love to go out and anchor. One of our favorite islands is Sucia Island. We love Desolation Sound. Kayaking to an island, hiking the island, that’s our favorite way to relax.”

The dream is to take another trip to Alaska, a 3-month adventure. Until then she’s helping other boaters get a little closer to their boating dreams.
